Lowe Family Has Tons of Talent

Julie Kilmer - Entertainment Writer, Branson Tri-Lakes Daily News

Think colossal. Then think beyond that. Only then do you have an idea of the titanic amount of talent within the musical Lowe Family of Utah.

They're a miraculous combination of every kind of musical, theatrical and dance talent you can dare to imagine, and then some. Stars of their own show in Branson for the past three years at the MGH Performing Arts Center, this is no ordinary family -- but one that is exceptionally gifted across the board.

Consisting of six girls, and one boy, the Lowe siblings' original inspiration were their parents, who were raised in musical families themselves and passed on their musical heritage to their children. LeeAndra and Bob Lowe performed at the Pasadena Playhouse, Hollywood Palladium, in dance bands and overseas USO tours, and directed summer stock theatre. Daughter Kysha Lowe, who performed with the family for the last two seasons, and a world-class violinist, married and now lives in Houston, Texas.

Reminiscent of fictional musical movie families like the Vontrapps' from The Sound of Music, or the Partridge Family, The Lowe Family talent is real, within one family, and a wonder to witness. In their show, they deliver their best of spectacular talent, musical genius, family values and variety across genres and decades of music.

"We love all kinds of music," mother LeeAndra Lowe said. The Lowe family has taken their talents around the world, playing in concerts across the United States, performing for the Olympics, government officials, fairs, a New Year's celebration in China, and have opened for The Lettermen, Lee Greenwood, Alabama and more.

It is obvious that their show is a top, professional production, featuring siblings, mother, and father vocally, instrumentally, and in dance. Each family member proficiently plays several instruments, including the banjo, violin, piano, bass guitar, organ, trumpet, marimba, mandolin, drums, percussion and more. This family makes education a priority too. "We love education," LeeAndra Lowe said.

Since they were youngsters, all the Lowe siblings began studying and performing the "music of the masters," often getting up at 4:30 a.m. to practice, and every sibling has either earned a musical degree or is working toward one. They also perform some unique historical tributes during the show, including the story of a Civil War soldier and a scene from the Titanic. On the violin, "Nearer My God to Thee," was played -- the song Titanic musicians played to calm passengers as the boat was sinking. What a beautiful, serene, sound to grace your ears. The history behind the songs made them that much more meaningful.

Each family member has an astounding trail of credits in their wake, some beginning at the tender age of 1. Most have soloed or toured with symphonies, had theatrical roles, won major dance and instrument competitions, performed in concertos, and have received numerous awards in every musical, dance and theatrical category imaginable.

Speedy and energetic in every act, they move from one number to the next, changing instruments in mid-stream. They are also quick on their feet, performing an amazing variety of dance styles, including clog, ballroom, Irish Step Dance, Jazz and Swing, from the '20s on down. They pack a lot of musical variety into two hours, and what a superb job they do.

Some audience members knew what to expect when they came to see the show. "So far this is our eighth show. We're kind of picking out the cream of the crop," Judy Tadur, of Tacoma, Wash., said. The Lowe family is a miraculous example of what individuals and families can do when they commit themselves to something they love.

Accompanied by a video of the family, LeeAndra Lowe explains what it was like raising all her children to the tune of "Oh Susanna," describing a hectic pace and delicate balance of lessons, practice, school, transportation and household chores. On a personal level, she also talked about the importance of home, family and being grateful, relating a story of a little boy trying to put a puzzle of the world together.

She went on to describe how improving home life would translate into better communities and a better, stronger nation. Their extraordinary performance culminated in a monumental patriotic salute that encompassed the whole stage with large, American flags -- a remarkable display.

A truly "see it to believe it performance," you'll not want to miss the Lowe Family of Utah.
